Character Name: Satine
Canon: Moulin Rouge!
Canon Point: Right after "One Day I’ll Fly Away" but before "Elephant Love Medley"
Age: Roughly late 20s. I’m placing her at 28
Personality:
Satine is a courtesan. She sells her time, her attention, her body, and whatever else a person may desire, so long as they can pay the right price. She is paid to make people fall in love with her, again and again. Satine handles each guest with acute attention, being everything they want and desire in one sumptuous package. Does the client want someone who acts all scared as if it is her first time? She can deliver. Perhaps bright and bubbly? There won’t be anyone brighter and bubblier than her. Do they want a wilting flower, needing the love and affection of this one individual? Easily done by Satine. Perhaps they want a smoldering temptress, ready to pounce on her prey with precision and ferocity like a tigress? No one can do it better than her. She can do it all. Confident in her abilities, in her appearances, in her skills, assured in her beauty, no one's charm really phases her. She can turn confident men into stuttering idiots. She can make shy wallflowers be filled to the brim with unearned pride. She is always in control.
Satine has made a living of reading people. She knows how best to manipulate them, how best to perform for them, get them to perform for her, and cater to what would be most personally appealing to them so that they fall into her hands without any issue. She knows how to adapt and alter her personality, switching from mask to mask for whatever the occasion, for whatever is needed to get what she wants. She can think incredibly quick on her feet, able to make up stories on the spot to keep on top of a situation. She has no problem lying and her masks are endless. Only a few have ever seen her true face, her true desires. Of course, those who pay for her have never seen such a thing.
Each person who can afford her (for the price of her affection is a small fortune) is madly in love with her. She does it with such frequency, it’s more-or-less a game to her. Love is something to be toyed with, played with, used, and abused. Love is for fools and anyone who tells her otherwise is a fool, themselves. She isn't naive enough to believe in love and she certainly doesn't believe that is is something magical. For all those who love Satine, Satine never loves them back. She can’t fall in love. She won’t fall in love. Falling in love, when you’re the sparkling diamond of the Moulin Rouge is the most foolish thing she could possibly do, and Satine is no fool. She’s seen what happens when people are in love, the declarations of love, the risks they’ll take, the danger they place themselves in, and Satine wants none of it.
What Satine does want, is freedom. All her life, she has only known the affections of people who are willing to pay for her or expect something from her. Love must always come with a price as far as she's seen. Only Harold Zidler and Marie have ever cared for her, and even they have their own intentions and stipulations for the care they have for Satine. She knows they love her, that they mean well for her, but while Harold and Marie also endeavor to help her dream come true, their intentions are not purely altruistic. She is Harold’s Sparkling Diamond, his property in a sense. What he asks of her, Satine must ultimately do, just the same as any of the girls and boys of the Moulin Rouge. Even if Satine has the most expensive quarters and only the richest of clients, she has the least freedom. She, like the others, is a creature of the night; beautiful plaything for the wealthy. Satine is not meant to be in the day light, not meant to know the truth that only the light can bring. However, even if she cannot be in that light, she longs for it and fears it. She wants her freedom, to no longer have to sell her body to the highest bidder, and no longer find love to be a game.
Satine has never known pure love; love given without circumstance or requirements. While she feels she has no need for love, she feels that freedom, and all that it entails, might just be the chance for it. With freedom, she would no longer have to sell herself, she would no longer belong to the highest bidder. She would no longer have to make people fall in love with her, unless she truly wanted them to. However, despite wanting freedom, Satine is also incredibly afraid of it. Freedom is also a loss of control, a loss of "the known" and both those things frighten her. The Moulin Rouge is her family at the best of times, and her home even with all of its problems. She both wants and dreads the idea of ever leaving the Moulin Rouge. No one, not even Harold, who is by far the closest she gets to friend and family, knows her desire for freedom away from the Moulin Rouge. Satine holds this wish, this dream, close to her heart and utters not a word to it to anyone lest it be used in some fashion against her. It is a wish that can never be realized; can never come true. That is why, while her biggest and first wish is freedom, her second is to be a real actress.
It is the second wish that meets her first wish half-way. While she would still be a creature of the night, she would be bathed in the light of the stage. Men would still pay incredible amounts to see her, to fall in love with her, but they wouldn’t be able to touch her, their love would be for the art of acting and not for her body. Most importantly, Satine would have the freedom to shed her masks once the curtains closed. In fact, it is with acting, wearing the masks of other characters, that she feels some of her greatest moments of joy and happiness. She can be free to play the part of another, rather than play a different version of herself. It is for this second dream, that she is willing to go to multiple lengths to see it fulfilled. If that means selling her body one more time, so be it. If she must play the part of someone who is doting and adoring to her benefactor, then she’ll do that too. All of it to ultimately achieve the final wish, to be an actress and never have to sell herself again; never be paid to make someone fall in love with her and then have them realize the illusion is over. If she can achieve that, perhaps she’ll know what it’s like to have some sort of freedom since she doesn’t believe that love is anything but a game, and she, an excellent player, able to detach herself from any feelings connected to it.
Despite her feelings that those who fall in love are fools, Satine herself is gentle in nature and very careful. She doesn't like seeing people hurt by what she does, warning them that she will make them fall in love with her and ultimately, she will hurt them in the end. Satine relishes in physical contact, in touching and kissing, and enjoys sex as well, she just wants it on her terms rather than who can pay the most. She has a desire to help others, to encourage real talent and skills. Despite the mix up with Christian, she saw his potential and wanted to encourage it. Mostly because his skills would ensure a great script for her to perform, but partially to give him real encouragement and to have him give his writing his all. She doesn't want to see anyone hurt, even if such a thing is common in the dark underworld she thrives in, Satine doesn't want to partake in that aspect.
When she actually enjoys someone's company, Satine acts younger, even playful. She teases them, wants to please them, is prone to giggling more, and has a desire to make sure they're safe and sound. She acts playful with Zidler and is the most open with him, seeking to please him the most. When Christian nearly blows their cover during rehearsal, she wants to protect all the others in the Moulin Rouge and so plays the part of an arrogant courtesan smitten by the Duke. She also openly enjoys singing and dancing alongside her acting, using these as a means of escape and distancing herself from a situation.
However, no matter what Satine has seen, no matter what she is feeling, what may be her actual opinions on the matter, she will do what must be done first and foremost. She will put on a smile, if needed, a frown, or a scowl. She will slip on a mask until there isn't a single hint, not a single seam, of what she's really feeling to be seen. In the end, Satine will hide away her true self, leaving everyone but only those closest to her to wonder what she's actually like. She presents herself as an enigma to the world, and teases the challenge of finding out her true self, when in reality, Satine would never let anyone get so close.
